Do I Need a Bot or Windows Live Agent?

Should we be creating rich desktop Vista applications or online hosted bots or agents?

#1 Ask yourself this, would Google build an all knowing desktop app or web app?

  • A web app, accessible anytime, from anywhere, from any device, and with access to all your personal data and history stored in the cloud

#2 What is it that a Messenger bot or presence based application with a set of pre-defined context, static information and access to pre-determined dynamic data sets provides over a rich desktop application?

  • Presence enabled application
  • Multiple communication end-points (IM, VoIP, mobile, e-mail)
  • Roaming user “cloud” data
  • Centralized feedback mechanism for the application
  • Integration with user profile data
  • 7x24 availability w/SLA
  • Granular reporting on the effectives
  • Viral spread with no need to force updates

#3 Are there verticals where bots or agents are more applicable?

  • Certainly, verticals where a business wants to take advantage of (demographics of the IM audience, the viral spread of these applications, and the lightweight design required to proto-type an application, get rich conversational feedback from users, remotely manage a portion of the pre-determined application intereactions.)

The Bubble’s Alive and Well in Central Oregon

The Bubble’s Alive and Well in Central Oregon
A late summer trip to Bend highlights the size of the housing bubble

It was late summer, so we set off to Central Oregon to get a little R&R and enjoy the country.  We all had a great time traveling through Black Butte, Bend, and Hood River.  In and around Bend, Oregon you can’t help but be struck by the size of the housing bubble reflected in this sleepy little town.  Here where a high paying job tops out between $50-70K, there’s no economic engine to speak of, and no tech jobs/wealth creation—many houses go for $700K+ prices.  I had a very enteraining conversation with a local home owner that thought $1M+ prices were a bargin, but later discovered that she flies in from Boston for 3 weeks of vacation in year.  You've got to wonder how long the money will keep flowing and how long the speculation that's taken Bend housing prices to 80% over fair market value can last in light of rising rates.

That said Bend is great small town in a beautiful location.  I can't wait to go back.  I wonder if that says something more about what's driving the bubble?
